As well as publishing books, ||| X |||–||| Y ||| distributes its technical titles through the Safari Books Online e-reference service.Melbourne ||| Y ||| Cummings founded ||| X |||–||| Y ||| in 1942, with first book published by ||| X |||–||| Y ||| being MIT professor Francis Weston Sears' Mechanics. Its first computer book was Programs for an Electronic Digital Computer, by Wilkes, Wheeler, and Gill. In 1970, ||| X |||–||| Y ||| acquired W.A. Benjamin Company, and merged with Benjamin Cummings in 1977. It was purchased by Pearson PLC in 1988.
